DESIGN

PROCESS

Theme: Historical to Modern Day

The new visual identity was created through a complex process that combines a unique story, expert design thinking, and simple geometric principles generating the building blocks for the broader visual identity and multifaceted brand platform. Nidaros Cathedral was used as a strong visual reference in order to create a sense of pride around the brand among locals.

Ornamental and mathematical

Straight + curved, hard + soft

Our visual starting point

This tool works like a modular system there individual building blocks and historical references are simple to find; as Viking helmet, boats, shields, gothic arches, Trondheim rose, concrete etc.

LOGO

Trondheim brand mark

The Trondheim brand mark makes a bold statement for Trondheim. The ‘T’ symbol encapsulates the soft curves of the arches inside Nidaros Cathedral with a modern execution. Thus, creating the perfect contrasting elements from, clean to ornamental, calm to energetic, historical to modern, 8th – 21st century.

The ‘T’ symbol and word mark elements have size relations and *distances set in a lockup as presented on the grid. These relations and proportions ensure readability and optical balance between symbol and wordmark. They should never be modified.

*Clearspace exceptions: Maintaining clearspace with the Trondheim logo depends on the type of communication and use.

Secondary Trondheim Logo

Since Trondheim is not quite New York City or Paris – there is still a ways to go when it comes to brand recognition and making an impression on the rest of the world. Therefore, it was important for us to have another version of the logo where the Trondheim word mark is front and center for brand awareness. This logo is meant for special uses such as web an other instances where it is important to emphasize ‘Trondheim’.

The logo is also composed of the ‘T’ symbol and a word mark. These two elements have size relations and distances set in a lockup as presented on the grid. These relations and proportions ensure readability and optical balance between symbol and word mark. They should also never be modified.

VISUAL SYSTEM

A visual system that can generate layout principles, brand elements illustrations and pattern variations.

Patterns

Within the logo symbol lives the graphic ingredients to create patterns, illustrations and iconography. The versatility of the modular system needs to be consistent and well considered when creating new elements. Multiplying and puzzling the modules, we create patterns that can be used as decorative elements or actively with image or video.

Here follows some examples of sketched applications for social media backgrounds, iconography and illustrations.

TYPOGRAPHY

Typography is another important design element of the visual identity for Trondheim. Good typography can help shape the personality of the city – a mix of classic elegance and clean modernity.

Type stack

We chose two font families using a combination of serif and sans serif fonts for Trondheim brand related marketing: Victor Serif and ABC Diatype.

Victor Serif, by KOMETA, is a modern serif font with calligraphic details and a fresh new character. It is used mainly for titling and display purposes, voicing Trondheim in a bold elegant way. Works equally well in all-caps or small caps.

ABC Diatype, by DINAMO, is a neo-grotesk font with a friendly neutrality, its wide and open characteristics make easy to read as well as inviting. It is used for subtitling and running text but can also be used in combination with Victor Serif for titling combinations.

Hierarchy

Type hierarchy is important when using both fonts. The primary font, Victor Serif, is typically used larger than the secondary font, ABC Diatype. This creates a clear distinction between the two fonts but also informs the reader of two distinctive content types. This method should be consistent across website, Social Media or any printed material.
